<---- SHADEPAW
tom, nine moons
RANK: Apprentice
ALLIANCE: Boulderclan
APPEARANCE: Stocky, thickset tom with short black pelt and pale green eyes
PERSONALITY: Shadepaws primary disposition is hostility. A combination of quick temper and distrust of nearly every cat means he spends a lot of time with claws unsheathed and a snarl on his face. He has little to no patience and it only takes a single insult to go from a war of words to a battle of blows. The tom is even more aggressive towards those outside of his clan, constantly seeing them as enemies and refusing to associate with them. He is a talented fighter and will often seek excuses to combat with others.
Unfortunately, the violent tom also has a tendency to be reckless and rarely thinks before he acts. This careless impulsivity leads him into many unnecessary and brutal spars as well as causing him to make bad, thoughtless decisions. But Shadepaw is a stubborn tom and refuses to take advice or help from any cat and so will often repeat the same mistake over and over again. He despises needing help and would rather struggle through something alone than admit he is incompetent. The strong tom is proud and arrogant and can sometimes come across as harsh and cold when he speaks.
Beneath his overbearing flaws on the surface, those who observe and get to know Shadepaw past his aggressive acts would easily spot his virtues. The tom is an extremely dedicated apprentice, determined and strong willed to the bone. Once he has been set a goal he stops at nothing to complete it and he works hard to become a strong warrior. No cat could doubt his courage and loyalty to his clan either. Shadepaw would die for his clan, although he probably plans on taking several enemies with him to Starclan when he does.
Shadepaw was never one to follow orders and although that can make him annoying and disruptive, it has led to some strong leadership qualities. He is comfortable in charge and easily handles pressure and responsibility. However, giving the rash tom too much power is probably not the best idea as he has proven his incapability of making sensible decisions and his answers to problems often would end in violence.
REASON FOR NAME: The prefix ‘Shade-’ was given for his dark pelt. The Suffix ‘-paw’ was given for his apprentice status.
FAMILY: Darkcloud|Mother|NPC
Spottedclaw|Father|Deceased
HISTORY: Shadepaw’s parents were never truly close. Darkcloud was a warrior who had dreamt of being a queen and nursing kits since she was an apprentice. Spottedclaw was a senior warrior who had never found a mate and wanted kin. So the two found a common goal in each other and decided to have kits. Darkcloud had a difficult leaf-bare; little food and harsh conditions led to the early birth of a single kit, whom she named Shadekit for how his dark fur blended into the shadows of the nursery.
Shadekit was a little scrap of a kit when he was born but his birth came on the end of leaf-bare and so as food became plentiful once again the young kit grew. Spottedclaw was pleased to find that his son had inherited his strong, sturdy build and though Shadekit was small now, his father saw the potential of a great young warrior in him. The two spent a lot of time together and the young tom grew very close to his father, who taught him battle skills in his spare time. Spottedclaw assumed that his teachings would give his son a head start once he became an apprentice but had no idea that young Shadekit was practicing his newly learnt combat moves on other kits, not just in play fights, but in actual squabbles which were turned deadly serious by the young kits’ skill and ferocity. Shadekit was scolded for his rough behavior with other kits but he showed little remorse and continued to challenge his den mates with claws unsheathed and teeth bared. At five moons, Shadekit lost his idol and father, Spottedclaw, when he was killed fighting enemy cats on a border patrol. An accidental blow had sent him falling into a particularly sharp rock which killed him on impact with his head. The loss fueled Shadekits hatred of other clan cats, whom he already mistrusted and despised from stories fed to him by elders and his father. Darkcloud tried to comfort her torn son but Shadekit refused her pity and instead took out his anger on his denmates, attacking them and wounding them even worse than before. He even began to challenge apprentices who taunted him, one scuffle leading to the nick in his left ear.
Although he was threatened with the delay of his apprentice ceremony for his misbehaviour, it was eventually decided that it would cause more harm than good to keep the rapidly growing kit cooped up in a nursery any longer than was necessary. So, at seven moons, Shadekit was given his ceremony and made an apprentice. Becoming an apprentice was a huge moment in the young tom’s life. He immediately began to excel at battle skills but his reckless impatience and adamant refusal to follow orders made him a poor hunter. Shadepaw has much work to do before he can learn to balance his skills and understand that a strong fighter does not have to be a merciless one.
RP EXAMPLE:Twitchpaw trembled in terror, his fur bristling as he stared from his place of hiding in the bushes.
“Oh Starclan. She heard me!” he quavered quietly under his breath, green eyes so wide in fright and horror that he looked almost comical. The nervous apprentice tried to calm his shaking, digging his claws into the ground and clamping his eyes shut.
It had all happened so fast. He had been chasing a pesky frog which had been charging through a bush when he stepped on a twig, letting out an earsplitting crack. Normally, he would just ignore the noise and continue to chase his prey as his clumsy mistakes were nothing new to him, but this time, a voice responded.
"I-I know you're there." Twitchpaw had frozen, leaving his frog to dart to the safety of a near pool. The tabby’s ears flattened against his head, and he slowly, instinctively, drew himself into the bushes, careful to keep still. That was when he saw the she-cat. Her eyes were wildly gazing everywhere and her body tense, alert. The young tom could see the tattered remains of her tail, leaving him to fearfully conclude that she was a hostile rouge.
And that’s how Twitchpaw came to be hidden under the bush, heart pulsing madly, tail growing fluffier by the second. The pressure of keeping still to watch was driving him insane and as he shuffled awkwardly in his tight hiding spot he stepped on a leaf.
Crunch.
Oh mousedung…
"C-Come out. I know yo-you're in there." Twitchpaw held his breath. The she-cat was staring straight at him now, although he could tell by the way her eyes roved wildly over the bush that she had not yet spotted him. The shaky tom's mind reeled as he tried to think through this. This was an enemy cat: his natural reaction should be to drive her out of Marshclan territory. However, Twitchpaw was slowly becoming more and more certain that this was a fierce, hostile enemy, ignoring the stutter in her frightened voice that marked her harmless. And she was bigger than him, although so were nearly all the other cats he knew. So would it be wiser to run and get help?
No said some mad voice in his head, she’ll hear you leaving and run and then all of Marshclan will think you’re a coward for not fighting. Twitchpaw resisted the urge to whimper as he made up his mind. Drawing in a deep breath, the tiny tom launched himself from the bushes with a squeaked yowl. Fluffing out his muddy fur to almost twice its usual size, tail curving in a menacing bushy form, Twitchpaw stood on his toes as he snarled at the intruder, praying to Starclan his eyes wouldn’t betray the nervous drumming of his heartbeat.
For a heartbeat of short silence, Twitchpaw remained there, teetering backwards and forwards on his outstretched claws, unsure of what to do next; too scared to attack the she-cat and too awkward to spit out a threat or warning. He ended out growling out some half snarl, half yelp. Great. Twitchpaw raised his chin to stare in what he hoped was a threatening glare down at the intruder. I hope someone gets here soon he thought desperately.
