Sandpaw hadn't expected to wonder off, out of camp, but her paws just took the route out of camp and towards the border. Perhaps she could hunt to make up for it; though, Eaglestar might not like her wondering off without letting him know. The thought made the small she-cat pause for a moment, before continuing on again. One of the downsides of having the leader as your mentor was having to try and live up to them. She knew she could be something for GoldenClan, but leader? It wasn't only that, it was being taught by someone so great and powerful. Sandpaw just felt...like a scrawny mouse compared to Eaglestar.
The small sand colored tabby stilled for a moment as she neared the border, unsure of where she was at the moment. Which Clan did this border again? She wasn't so sure; after all, Eaglestar hadn't gone over this with her yet. Turning, Sandpaw paused, should she head back now? She just got there. She didn't want to worry anyone though; but she didn't want to keep running away from things she didn't know. 'Oh please, you'll always be running; you're just a little kit who hides from the world.' Sandpaw shook her head to get rid of the thought; she couldn't think like that. She was better than that; she'd stay. 'Yeah, I'm an apprentice now! I don't hide anymore.'
Perhaps she was just trying to convince herself, but either way, her inner pep-talk worked. She continued on, looking at the border, but not going near it. What if she accidentally crossed it while a patrol was coming by? Then that'd mean trouble for GoldenClan, and that was the last thing she wanted. So, Sandpaw just looked, but kept her eyes and ears out for other cats as well as prey.
There.
A squirrel. A nice, plump, oblivious squirrel that was busying itself with chewing on a nut. Sandpaw crept forward, her paws as silent as the surroundings. The squirrel didn't seem to realize she was there; otherwise it would've ran away by now. The small she-cat thought her luck as an apprentice would finally begin. She was wrong, unfortunately. When she was close enough, she pounced; but she had crushed a small leaf beneath her paws. The squirrel was up the trunk of thee tree before she could even land. And she almost had it too! 'Hah, this is what's going to happen every single time. Failure.'
Perhaps that mean, Kinktail voice was right. Perhaps she was just a failure; she couldn't even catch a simple mouse-brained squirrel. What kind of apprentice was she? 'A new one. It was your first try; give yourself a break.' That was true; it was her first time hunting as an apprentice. Newly made or not, though, she needed to catch something for the clan.
So, she paused; where to hunt? Her ears then flattened against her head, showing her saddened mood. Her eyes were downcast and she sat down dejectedly. How could she hunt if she didn't know how to hunt correctly? Did she even have the right skills? She didn't know, but she wanted to hope so. 'And hoping is all you'll do.' Kinktail would've said that. Sandpaw's eyes hardened with determination. 'No, you're wrong Kinktail. You're wrong.' She was going to prove Kinktail wrong.

Eaglestar looked out into GoldenClan's camp, the wound from his recent tumble with a coyote still apparent along his left leg; the patrols had all been sent for sunhigh and most apprentices were out training with their mentors. His amber orbs scanned the apprentice's den, searching for a certain sandy brown tabby she-cat, but saw nothing. He'd made Sandpaw his own apprentice because he had seen a certain level of potential in her that he wanted to make sure she unlocked. The large tom's eyes then moved towards the fresh-kill pile, and there was no Sandpaw there either, but he kept a cool head as he always did. He wasn't the type to get angry over dumb things, especially not towards the apprentices. The young one had only been made an apprentice a day prior, so she couldn't have gotten too far. She hadn't even begun training yet.
Upon further inspection, making sure the she-cat really wasn't hiding anywhere, Eaglestar slinked out of the camp, ready to track her down. He spread his maw, waiting for Sandpaw's scent to float in. There, he spoke in his mind. It hadn't taken long for him to gain control of his apprentice's trail. What could she have been thinking, going off on her own anyway? He had a whole practice regimen planned out for the day if she'd only waited for him.
His paws silently came to a stop when he saw the she-cat, but he quickly dropped low to the ground when he noticed that she was trying to hunt something. Eaglestar didn't want to scare her target away, and besides, he did want to see how she approached the stalking method so that he would know how to teach her about that later. It seemed like moons passed, before the she-cat pounced... And missed. The leader's ears perked up in amusement at the she-cat. "That was an excellent try, Sandpaw," Eaglestar strongly praised, as he walked into her line of sight. "You do need to watch your footing, however. Prey have excellent hearing, just like we do." His tail flickered.
Suddenly his expression turned calm and serious. "This is the border with BoulderClan," he looked out into the valley, the valley where the aggressive cats of BoulderClan made their home. "Come here and take in this scent. You'll meet them in the near future, I'm sure." Eaglestar parted his maw once more, taking in the scent of the valley cats himself. It was a fresh, mountain air type of smell, but also a little musty. "Remember to tell me if you scent one on our territory. Don't go looking for them on your own," he hissed. Eaglestar knew how dangerous BoulderClan cats could be; more dangerous than the other clans, even, and certainly more unpredictable.
"Do you understand?"

Sandpaw almost jumped once she heard Eaglestar's mew. She hadn't expected him to be there; and to be honest, she got a little frightened. Perhaps it was because she was near the border, or because she didn't know he was there. Either way, she felt silly, getting frightened like that. She dipped her head at her leader, ears flattened in embarrassment. "Of course, Eaglestar. I'll work on it." Work on it she shall.
The small sand colored tabby turned her jade green gaze towards her leader, whose own gaze was towards the border. He had said it was with BoulderClan; she'd heard stories about the aggressive cats. She trembled a bit, facing a BoulderClan cat was not on her to-do list...ever. 'You wouldn't stand a chance against them.' Sandpaw looked at the valley, her tail flicking in anxiety.
"Come here and take in this scent. You'll meet them in the near future, I'm sure." Sandpaw trembled slightly once more; she didn't want to show fear, but she couldn't help it. She shakily made her way towards her mentor and leader. A musty, mountain-ish scent flooded towards her. It was...unpleasant; she didn't like it. "We won't have to fight them anytime soon, right?" She couldn't help but ask. She didn't want a fight, not so soon; she was just an apprentice!
"Remember to tell me if you scent one on our territory. Don't go looking for them on your own," Sandpaw flinched back at the hiss from her leader. She figured that Eaglestar didn't really mean it, but it still hurt. Like a kit, she stepped back, looking at her mentor with wide, frightened eyes. She wasn't used to being hissed at like that. It scared her. 'You're such a kit. He probably snapped at you because he regrets choosing you an his apprentice.' She could practically hear Kinktail's evil laughter. 'Come on Sandpaw; you'll never learn to grow it you don't learn to accept the harsh reality of life.'
"Do you understand?"
Sandpaw nodded; "Yes Eaglestar, I understand." she softly mewed, looking cautiously at her mentor. 'Come on, Sandpaw. No lies; just the harsh truth.' Taking a deep breath, the small brown tabby slowly moved forward, near her mentor, looking out at BoulderClan territory. "Eaglestar? Are the stories true...about BoulderClan?" She needed to know what she would be going against; no lies, just the harsh truth.
