Berrypaw was glad he had leaped back, as Shadepaw's claws came slashing right where he had been standing just a moment before.
"That's right!" snarled the angry black tom. "Run! Run away you coward!"
Shadepaw's words made Berrypaw want to run right back to him and strike him in the face, but a quick look at Blackhawk told him that that particular mode of action would be very ill-advised. She was not only a warrior and vastly more experienced than the two of them, but she was really rather large as well, and judging by the way she was looking at Shadepaw, the honey-coloured apprentice knew that this was one fight he didn't want to get tangled up in.
"When you think you are big enough to take me on, Shadepaw, you think again." Blackhawk said, obviously angry that Shadepaw would defy her in such an open way. "It would serve you best to curb your tongue much as Berrypaw here has done."
Berrypaw was looking in surprise at the open words of praise Blackhawk had just given him, when out came Aspenpaw, of all cats, glaring at him in particular.
"Greetings, Blackhawk and Shadepaw. And of course! I forgot, Berrypaw. I must say, I do disagree to one thing you've said there, Blackhawk, do correct me if I'm wrong, but we are in BoulderClan, yes? Known for being the most ruthless? And other than that fact, they weren't seriously hurting each other. I don't see any blood! And perhaps old grudges should be left for them to fight out. We've always known that 'if you back down, you're a coward'. Can't you see that this is merely the usual scuffle, not uncommon in our Clan? It's the other cat's fault if he looses, it's his problem -- not the winner's.
"Berrypaw, Shadepaw-- that fight wasn't rough or hard, was it? I saw some of it, it looked like you were having a perfectly fine time. Besides, they do have a... medicine cat apprentice here-- I do believe they were just fine; Oh, but of course, you're the warrior here."
Berrypaw glared at Aspenpaw. He hadn't missed the pointed barb in the young cat's speech, and he would pay for it. Honestly, the honey-coloured tom didn't know how Aspenpaw ever came to be their medicine cat apprentice. He cared not at all for the other cats in their Clan, and from what Berrypaw had seen, had a truly fox-hearted personality. Maybe when they were younger, Berrypaw would have been friends with him, but he had been so convinced that no one wanted to be his friend, and then he had taken up with Shadepaw. That particular alliance had cemented their relationship as enemies.
Glancing out of the corner of his eyes at Blackhawk in case she had any objections, Berrypaw stepped forward and confronted the smarmy medicine cat apprentice. "For your information, Aspenpaw," he snarled, shoving his face in the unsavory apprentice's, "I was the one who was winning, until Blackhawk just happened by here and decided to save your friend. Perhaps you should rethink your earlier comments and thank her for helping Shadepaw out of a sticky situation. After all, if things had been allowed to continue, there's no doubt as to who the victor would have been."

Shadepaw didn’t like the look Blackhawk was giving him. He didn’t like that he was still sitting here being snarled at by that flea-bitten she-cat when he could be scratching Berrypaw’s eyes out. As his heart gradually slowed its pace from its previous adrenaline propelled thrumming, the black tom flexed his claws defiantly, not quite ready to let this fight go unfinished. I’ll just wait until stupid Blackhawk leaves, Shadepaw schemed, his pale eyes narrowing as they flickered between Berrypaw and the intruding warrior, and as soon as she’s gone I’ll…
"It would serve you best to curb your tongue much as Berrypaw here has done."
At the mention of the honey coloured tom, Shadepaw only bristled more, his eyes swiveling to lock onto his enemies ice blue orbs. Berrypaw. Once again every cat was loading that piece of fox-dung with praise for he was the perfect apprentice, the perfect example for everything. The green depths of the black toms eyes were beginning to develop an insane glint as he continued to stare at the battered tom. His beam of concentrated hatred was broken by an unexpected, but much welcomed, voice.
"Greetings, Blackhawk and Shadepaw. And of course! I forgot, Berrypaw.” Shadepaw smirked, twisting his head to see his friend enter upon the scene. Aspenpaw. Now there was a cat he could trust to take his side. “I must say, I do disagree to one thing you've said there, Blackhawk, do correct me if I'm wrong, but we are in BoulderClan, yes? Known for being the most ruthless? And other than that fact, they weren't seriously hurting each other. I don't see any blood!” Aspenpaw and Shadepaw had been semi-friends as kits in the nursery. Shadepaw didn’t really aim his furious outlashes at the small tom who was so caught up in his bitterness for the parents that never loved him. The dark mostly attacked those that infuriated him or taunted him and Aspenpaw did neither. They were very similar on most levels, appreciating each other’s strong characters. Aspenkit was really the closest thing Shadekit had to a friend. When Aspenpaw was forced to become a medicine cat apprentice, Shadepaw was outraged. His only friend, lost to the pitiful squalor of a medicine cats life? Shadepaw persistently encouraged Aspenpaw to ignore his medicine cat calling, to rebel and shun his mentor to become a warrior. But try as both cats might, Aspenpaw was doomed to remain a medicine cat apprentice. Shadepaw never truly gave up, as he still taught his recently learned battle moves to his friend when he had the time; spat venom with Aspenpaw at Firethorn when the medicine cat’s back was turned. “And perhaps old grudges should be left for them to fight out. We've always known that 'if you back down, you're a coward'. Can't you see that this is merely the usual scuffle, not uncommon in our Clan? It's the other cat's fault if he loses, it's his problem -- not the winner's.” Shadepaw flicked his tail in agreement. Yep, Aspenpaw was a good cat. His luck was just poor.
Aspenpaw always did find a way to phrase the words Shadepaw was thinking just right. The black tom blinked triumphantly at Blackhawk, grateful for his friend backing up his motives. As Berrypaw stepped forward, Shadepaw switched his gaze back to his rival, his expression loaded with contempt as the pale-furred tom’s grating voice filled the silence.
"For your information, Aspenpaw, I was the one who was winning, until Blackhawk just happened by here and decided to save your friend. Perhaps you should rethink your earlier comments and thank her for helping Shadepaw out of a sticky situation. After all, if things had been allowed to continue, there's no doubt as to who the victor would have been."
Shadepaw couldn’t recall getting to his feet. He didn’t remember crossing the distance between the apprentices to reach Berrypaw’s twisted expression. But they must have happened because now he was shoving his rage-contorted face into Berrypaw’s, the combination of insulting Aspenpaw and accusing him of losing enough to drive the black tom to grate his teeth in fury as he glared daggers at Berrypaw, whose icy eyes were only a few inches away. Somwhere behind him, Blackhawk must be furious but he could hardly care at this moment.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he growled infuriately, “Last I recall, I was shredding your ears and your pathetic grip barely had a hold on me. I was heartbeats away from flipping you over and shredding your guts out, you miserable foxdung!”

Blackhawk was annoyed further by the appearance of yet another apprentice. She had seen the kit around a time or two and knew who he was. When he spoke against her interrupting him. She sighed in exasperation. For once, she was glad she didn't have an apprentice. IF they were all this smart mouthed, she'd have already had to beat her own apprentice around a time or two. It was really obnoxious for these kits to think that they stood a chance if she got mad. They were lucky though, that the she-cat kept her temper in check when it wasn't needed in a fighting manner.
"I wasn't saying it was rough, Aspenpaw, but I do believe if they wish to practice their fighting skills, it is best done in front of one of their mentors. That way someone would be able to give them pointers. What I saw, looked like two errant kits attempting to play only with claws and teeth used. If you think battle skills like that will win you warrior status around here, the two of you have another thing coming.
She shook her head at Shadepaw's outburst. "You really should learn to curb your tongue, youngster. Keep it up, and that big mouth of yours will land you in a lot of trouble with a cat far superior to you." Her tail flicked in irratation. Blackhawk had been taught to respect her eldes, something these kits obviously didn't know.
OOC: I know they aren't kits, but she is much older than them, and sees them that way.
